Manychat is a DM automation platform. It connects to an Instagram professional account, a Facebook page, a TikTok account, a WhatsApp Business number, a Telegram bot, an SMS number or an email list, and it fires pre-built conversations when someone comments, replies to a story, or sends a message. The best known pattern is comment-to-DM: a follower types a keyword under a reel, Manychat sends them a link in a private message, and the creator never opens the app.

The company launched in 2015 and is the default name in the category, which is why so many rivals publish their own Manychat review with their own product ranked above it. Its App Store listing states the job in five words: “Turn comments into customers.”

Who it is for changed on 20 April 2026. That is the date Manychat announced a new price list built on Active Contacts, replacing the old Free, Pro and Elite tiers and folding the separate AI and Inbox add-ons into the plans. The new model applies to new sign-ups, and existing customers were promised advance notice before migration, so a pre-April dashboard still shows the old structure and this Manychat review describes the one it will be moved to.

How this Manychat review was built

  • No Manychat subscription purchased, no account connected, no automation run. This is a research-based review, not a hands-on test
  • Every figure is from manychat.com, the Manychat help centre, Meta’s developer documentation, Apple’s App Store listing and Trustpilot, all checked on 7 September 2026
  • Where a number has no source in the citation list it is arithmetic on a number that does, and the copy says so
  • We may earn a commission when you buy through our links. Commissions never touch scores or rank order

That label sets what this Manychat review can and cannot tell you. It can tell you exactly what each plan costs at each volume, because the help centre publishes the overage rates. It cannot tell you how the flow builder feels at 11pm or whether support answers in an hour or a week, because those claims need a purchase and a stopwatch. Where public review data speaks to those questions it is quoted below with its source and count.

Scores are Shoptera’s judgement of the published numbers against the rivals named in this review.

Plan 01 · Free and Essential

25 active contacts on the free plan

The free plan’s number is 25. That is how many Active Contacts, meaning distinct people who message you or trigger an automation in a billing month, Manychat allows before it stops responding for you, and it is down from the 1,000 contacts the old free tier included, a cut Manychat’s own August 2026 blog post acknowledges as its most common complaint.

An Active Contact is counted once per month regardless of how many messages the same person sends. Comments, story replies, DMs, broadcast responses and live chat all count. Imported contacts do not count until they interact, and the count resets every billing cycle, including on annual plans.

At 25 a month the free plan is a demo. It allows 2 channels from Instagram, TikTok, Messenger and Telegram, one user, one inbox seat and 4 live automations at once, and it stamps a “Powered by Manychat” line on the first message to every new contact.

A reel that pulls 30 keyword comments on a Tuesday exhausts the free plan’s allowance by Wednesday.

Essential, at $17 a month billed monthly or $14 billed yearly, lifts the cap to 250 and removes the branding. It keeps the 2-channel limit, adds a second user, allows unlimited automations, and leaves out AI entirely. Overage runs $0.10 per extra contact on monthly billing. For a creator with a steady 200-conversation month it is the honest entry point, and for anyone expecting growth it is the plan you outgrow in a quarter.

Plan 02 · Pro

$39 a month buys 2,500 contacts on Pro

Pro is the plan Manychat wants you on and the plan most of this Manychat review is about. It costs $39 a month billed monthly, or $29 a month on a yearly contract ($348 a year, a 25% saving), and it includes 2,500 Active Contacts, 3 channels chosen from all 7, 3 users, 2 inbox seats, AI-powered replies, WhatsApp broadcasts and API access. A 14-day trial is available.

The overage rate is $0.05 per extra contact on monthly billing, $0.038 on annual. That is half the Essential rate and twice the Business rate of $0.025, and it is the number that decides whether Pro is cheap.

Plan, monthly billingValueNote
Free$0 · 25 contacts2 channels, 4 live automations, Manychat branding
Essential$17 · 250 contacts$14 yearly · no AI · $0.10 per extra contact
Pro$39 · 2,500 contacts$29 yearly · 3 channels, AI, API · $0.05 per extra
Business$99 · 7,500 contacts$69 yearly · all 7 channels · $0.025 per extra
Advanced$199 · 25,000 contacts$139 yearly · 10 users · $0.004 per extra

Compare the alternatives at the same $39. Chatfuel’s AI PRO plan is $49 a month with unlimited active contacts and an AI fair-use cap. InstantDM’s Trendsetter plan is $24.99 with no contact ceiling but Instagram and Facebook only. Manychat charges $10 less than Chatfuel and $14 more than InstantDM for a wider channel list and a metered contact count. Whether the meter matters depends on your worst month, not your average one.

The viral reel bill, plan by plan

Take a reel that brings 5,000 people into your DMs in one month, twice your Pro allowance. On Pro monthly billing the extra 2,500 contacts cost $125 on top of the $39 base, a $164 month. On Essential the same month is 4,750 contacts over the 250 cap, $475 in overage, $492 in total. On Business the whole spike sits inside the 7,500 allowance and the bill stays at $99.

A 5,000-contact monthValueNote
Essential$4924,750 over the 250 cap at $0.10
Pro$1642,500 over the 2,500 cap at $0.05
Business$99inside the 7,500 allowance
Shoptera’s arithmetic

These totals are Manychat’s published base prices plus its published overage rates, multiplied out by Shoptera. Manychat does not publish a worked example.

The overage is added automatically to the next invoice. There is no cap you can set and no warning threshold in the published documentation. Manychat’s answer, in its 19 August 2026 post on pricing complaints, is that a viral month is also a month of new customers and the per-contact charge is smaller than the value of the contact.

That argument holds for a shop selling $60 products and holds less well for a creator handing out a free PDF. If your reels routinely cross 3,000 conversations, the $99 Business plan costs less than Pro plus overage at anything above 3,700 contacts, and the break-even moves lower still on annual billing at $69.

3 channels on Pro and 7 on Business

Manychat’s channel list is the widest in the category: Instagram, TikTok, Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram, SMS and Email. No rival covered here connects TikTok DMs at all, and only Chatfuel and BotPenguin match it on WhatsApp.

The catch is the count. Free and Essential allow any 2 of Instagram, TikTok, Messenger and Telegram, and WhatsApp is not on their menu at any price. Pro allows 3 of the full 7. Business and Advanced remove the limit.

For most small businesses 3 is enough: Instagram, WhatsApp, and either Messenger or Email. A brand running Instagram, TikTok, WhatsApp and Messenger together has to pay $99 a month for the fourth connection even if the fourth channel sees 40 conversations a month. That is the single most common reason to move from Pro to Business, and it has nothing to do with contact volume.

Budget for WhatsApp twiceWhatsApp carries its own cost outside Manychat, because Meta bills business-initiated WhatsApp conversations directly and Manychat’s plans cover the automation layer only. Budget for both before you compare Manychat to a WhatsApp-only tool.

24 hours is the Meta rule behind every automation

Every Instagram DM tool, Manychat included, runs inside Meta’s messaging API, and the API sets one rule that explains most of what Manychat can and cannot do. Meta’s developer documentation states: “Your app has 24 hours to respond to any message sent from an Instagram user to your app user.”

In practice that means Manychat can reply to a comment, a story mention or a DM at any point in the following 24 hours, and after that window closes it cannot send a promotional message to that person until they message again. Broadcasts to old contacts are gated by this rule, not by Manychat’s plan tier. Any tool promising unlimited cold DMs on Instagram is either using a human-agent exemption Meta polices closely or is running a browser bot outside the API, which is how accounts get restricted.

What the rule does to your contact countA contact who has not messaged you in 24 hours cannot be re-engaged with marketing, so the contact count you pay for is a count of conversations, not a list you own, and this Manychat review treats it that way throughout.

Manychat requires an Instagram professional account (Business or Creator), which is a Meta requirement rather than a Manychat one. Personal accounts cannot connect to any of the tools covered here.

2 inbox seats on Pro, $25 each after that

The shared inbox was a $99-a-month add-on with 3 seats under the old structure, with extra seats at $39 each. Under the April 2026 plans it is bundled: 1 seat on Free and Essential, 2 on Pro (expandable to 3), 3 on Business (expandable to 5) and 5 on Advanced (expandable to 10), with each extra seat at $25.

Inbox seats by planValueNote
Free and Essential1 seatno extra seats
Pro2 seatsup to 3 at $25 each
Business3 seatsup to 5 at $25 each
Advanced5 seatsup to 10 at $25 each

The ceilings are the part to read twice. A support team of 4 people cannot buy 4 seats on Pro; the plan tops out at 3, so the fourth agent forces the $99 Business plan. A team of 6 hits the Business ceiling at 5 and moves to Advanced at $199. The seat price is modest and the seat limit is the real gate.

Users and seats are counted separately. Pro allows 3 users in the account (people who can edit automations) and 2 inbox seats (people who can answer live chat), which suits a setup where one person builds and two answer. Tidio, by contrast, includes 10 seats on every plan including its free one and meters conversations instead, so a large support team with modest volume is cheaper there. Support for the account itself is email on Essential and Pro, priority on Business and Advanced, and self-serve documentation on Free.

What the competition does better

InstantDM does comment-to-DM on one Instagram account for $9.99 a month with no contact meter, and its Trendsetter tier at $24.99 removes the hourly send limit. For a creator whose entire use case is “comment LINK, get the link”, that is $29 a month less than Manychat Pro for the same outcome.

Chatfuel’s AI PRO plan bills a flat $49 with unlimited active contacts, so the viral-reel month costs the same as the quiet one. Its AI is metered by a fair-use allowance instead, and its own pricing pages disagree about whether contact tiers still exist.

ReplyRush’s free plan allows 1,500 DMs a month against Manychat’s 25 active contacts, a gap of at least 60 times at the free tier. Tidio ships 10 agent seats on every plan. UChat’s Business plan is $15 for 1,000 bot users. None of the four connects TikTok, and every rival Manychat review that ranks its own product first leaves that gap out.

Where a rival beats ManychatValueNote
InstantDM$9.99/mo, no contact meterone Instagram account, comment-to-DM

ReplyRush free plan1,500 DMs a monthvs Manychat’s 25 active contacts
Tidio10 agent seatson every plan, free included

Where Manychat still wins is breadth on one invoice. Seven channels, AI included from Pro, a 14-day trial, and an API on the $39 tier is a combination no rival covered here matches at the price.

Public review data

Two public sources point in opposite directions and both deserve quoting with their counts. Apple’s App Store listing for the Manychat iPhone app shows 4.3 out of 5 from 2.1K ratings on 7 September 2026. Trustpilot shows a TrustScore of 2.1 out of 5 from 301 reviews on the same date, with 46% of reviewers giving one star and 39% giving five.

The App Store score rates the mobile app, and the Trustpilot score rates the company. The dominant themes in the one-star reviews on the day checked were billing that continued after cancellation, support that was hard to reach, and Active Contact counts higher than the reviewer expected. Shoptera has no way to verify any individual complaint. For this Manychat review the aggregate is quoted and nothing more.

Read together, the pattern is consistent with a product people like to use and a billing model people dislike being surprised by. The overage section above is the part of this Manychat review most likely to keep you off the second list.

If your automation problem is email rather than DMs, the Brevo review covers the equivalent decision on the email side of the stack. The Manychat brand page collects every Shoptera article on the company.

Questions buyers ask

Is Manychat free to use?
There is a free plan with 25 Active Contacts a month, 2 channels, 4 live automations and Manychat branding on the first message. It replaced a 1,000-contact free tier in April 2026. For anything beyond a trial run, Essential at $17 a month is the practical floor.
Is Manychat safe for Instagram?
Manychat operates through Meta’s official messaging API and requires an Instagram professional account, which is the sanctioned route. Risk comes from what you automate, not the tool: mass unsolicited DMs breach Meta’s 24-hour messaging rule regardless of the platform sending them.
Does Manychat include AI?
Yes, from the Pro plan upward. AI-powered replies and FAQ handling are included at $39 a month; the separate AI add-on from the old price list no longer appears on the September 2026 pricing page. Essential and Free do not include AI.
Can I use Manychat for WhatsApp?
WhatsApp is available on Pro, Business and Advanced, not on Free or Essential. Pro counts WhatsApp as one of its 3 channels. Meta’s per-conversation WhatsApp fees are billed separately from the Manychat subscription.
What happens if I go over my Active Contact limit?
Overage is charged per extra contact and added to the next bill automatically: $0.10 on Essential, $0.05 on Pro, $0.025 on Business, $0.004 on Advanced, with lower rates on annual billing. There is no published hard stop or spend cap.
