Coppel Max and Coppel Pay: how they work and how to get the most from them

If you have Crédito Coppel, you are probably already enrolled in two programs most people underuse: Coppel Max, which pays you back in electronic money, and Coppel Pay, which lets you spend your credit outside Coppel stores. Both can save you money, and both get expensive if you don't know the rules.

If you have Crédito Coppel, you are probably already enrolled in two programs that many people don't use well: Coppel Max, which pays you back in electronic money, and Coppel Pay, which lets you use your credit outside Coppel stores.

Both can help you save, or let you buy when you don't have a bank card. Both can also cost you if you don't know their rules. Here we explain each one, using the published terms.

We may earn a commission when you buy through our links. Commissions never touch scores or rank order.

What Coppel Max is

Coppel Max is the rewards program of the Grupo Coppel companies. It runs on electronic money (dinero electrónico): a balance you build when you shop or pay on time, and later spend on purchases.

Using your Crédito Coppel enrolls you in the program automatically. There is nothing separate to sign up for.

How you earn electronic money

With Crédito Coppel

  • On purchases: under the Coppel Max terms, Crédito Coppel customers earn 1% in electronic money on their credit purchases.
  • On on-time payments: you receive electronic money for every four consecutive on-time payments.

That second point matters. Paying on time doesn't only avoid charges and build your history. It also gives you a balance for your next purchase.

With a BanCoppel credit card

BanCoppel, Grupo Coppel's bank, is part of the program too:

  • 1% in electronic money once you accumulate 500 pesos or more in purchases.
  • 1.2% in your birthday month.
  • Extra percentages at affiliated merchants, which vary by merchant.

Temporary promotions

Now and then, promotions with higher rewards appear. BanCoppel, for example, has paid 100 pesos in electronic money for every 1,000 pesos spent at Coppel to payroll-card customers, with a cap per customer. These promotions are short and come with specific conditions, so read the terms before counting on one.

What doesn't earn electronic money

The terms exclude some transactions. The most common ones:

  • Purchases paid 100% with electronic money.
  • Additional cards linked to a BanCoppel credit card.
  • Returns: if you return a product, the electronic money that purchase earned is deducted. If you already spent it, your balance can go negative.

How to check and use your electronic money

You can check your balance in the Coppel app, on coppel.com, at the checkout of any store, on your account statement and in the Coppel Max section of coppel.com. BanCoppel card customers see it in the BanCoppel app.

To use it, choose to pay with electronic money when you buy. On Crédito Coppel purchases you can use it partially or in full. Check how long your balance lasts in the program terms, because electronic money doesn't last forever.

What Coppel Max is really worth

Take an example. If you buy a $9,599 washer on Crédito Coppel, you earn about $96 in electronic money. If you also pay on time, you add the on-time payment bonuses.

It isn't an amount that should change what you buy. A good cash discount weighs far more. But if you were going to use the credit anyway, it is money you shouldn't leave unused.

A year with Coppel Max, in numbers

Say that in one year you buy on credit a $9,599 washer, a $4,299 mattress and about $2,000 of clothing. That is roughly $15,900 in purchases. At Coppel Max's 1%, you earn close to $159 in electronic money.

Mattress$4,299About $43
ClothingAbout $2,000About $20

Plus the bonuses for every four consecutive on-time payments.

If you also pay on time all year, you add the bonuses for consecutive payments. It isn't much, but it covers part of your next purchase. The key is not letting it expire: check your balance every time you go to buy.

What Coppel Pay is

Coppel Pay is a way to use your Crédito Coppel line at other merchants. According to information published by Kardmatch in 2024, the service works like this:

  • It is by invitation. Coppel lets you know by email or SMS.
  • It requires a history. At least six months with your credit and on-time payments.
  • You need your online account linked to your credit, with your email and fingerprint registered.

Where it's accepted

Coppel has said there are more than 400 affiliated merchants, mostly in construction and transport. Reported examples include Home Depot, Comex, Office Depot, RadioShack, Volaris and Autobuses Estrella Blanca. Some physical stores set per-purchase limits of 50 to 5,000 pesos.

How you pay

  • In a physical store: give your customer number and authorize with your fingerprint, or use a code sent by SMS or a QR code.
  • Online: choose Coppel Pay at checkout and fill in the details requested.

Terms depend on the merchant and the amount, and run up to 12 months. The charge appears on your Coppel statement, and you can pay it off early with no penalty.

What Coppel Pay costs

This is its weak point. In 2024 a rate of 45% a year was reported for spreading purchases with Coppel Pay. The published example was a $6,499 phone that, over 12 months, ended up costing close to $9,400.

Check the current rate before using it, because it may have changed. Even so, it is expensive credit. Use it for something necessary and, if you can, pay it off quickly.

When Coppel Pay makes sense

  • For emergencies such as home repairs with materials from Home Depot or Comex, if you don't have a bank card.
  • For bus or plane tickets you can't pay in cash at that moment.
  • If you pay it off soon, to keep the interest down.

When it doesn't

  • For purchases you can wait to pay in cash.
  • If you have a bank card with interest-free months (meses sin intereses) at the same merchant.
  • If you already have several installment purchases on your Crédito Coppel. Each new charge reduces your available line and adds to your payments.

How to combine it all to spend less at Coppel

  • Buy during Coppel's sale seasons, such as Buen Fin 2026, November 13 to 17.
  • Pay cash or with interest-free months when you can.
  • If you use credit, pay on time to earn electronic money and pay it off early.
  • Spend your electronic money on your next purchase.
  • Read our Coppel coupons and deals guide before you pay.
