The cameras used to be the weak point
Every SimpliSafe system we've benched before this one shared the same complaint: the alarm hardware was reliable, the no-contract pricing was genuinely good, and then the cameras let it down — soft video at night, a laggy app, clips that took too long to land in the timeline. The 2026 refresh is the first version where that's no longer true.
What actually changed
The outdoor camera's night-vision range measured noticeably further on our bench than the previous generation, and clip-to-app latency dropped from an average of just over a minute to under 20 seconds in our testing window. The base station and sensors are largely unchanged — this is a camera-and-software refresh, not a new alarm platform.
Where it still loses to a professional install
This is still a DIY system: you're mounting sensors and pairing devices yourself, and professional monitoring is an add-on subscription rather than bundled in. If you want a technician to run wiring and you never want to think about the app, a professionally installed system will still feel more polished. If you want no contract, no technician visit, and pricing you can cancel anytime, this is the strongest version of that trade-off we've tested.
