Clean Origin is a US online jeweller selling lab-grown diamond engagement rings and fine jewellery, with natural diamonds as a smaller line. Its terms name the seller as AJS, and its Trustpilot profile gives an address in Stamford, Connecticut. Pieces are made to order and hand finished, so the ship date at checkout is an estimate.
It ships to the UK by FedEx International Priority. Everything else about the UK sale sits in one sentence on its shipping page: international customers pay the duties, taxes, surcharges and VAT. The site offers no pound pricing, only dollars or Canadian dollars.
Two kinds of UK buyer should look elsewhere first. Anyone buying a custom piece gets store credit, not cash, if they return it. Anyone who needs to know the final price in pounds before paying will not find it on Clean Origin.
How this Clean Origin review was put together
- No jewellery bought and no order placed. This is a research-based review, not a hands-on test
- Clean Origin terms come from its shipping policy, return policy, custom programme terms, terms and conditions and FAQ, checked 29 September 2026
- UK tax rules come from GOV.UK, Royal Mail’s customs help and Which?; the customs duty rate for jewellery could not be retrieved from the UK Trade Tariff service, so no duty figure appears on this page
- Rival terms come from 77 Diamonds’ FAQ and terms, checked the same day
- Where Clean Origin’s pages disagree, both versions are shown and the stricter one is scored
- We may earn a commission when you buy through our links. Commissions never touch scores or rank order
This page does not say whether a lab-grown diamond holds its value. Resale is not part of any score in this Clean Origin review.
Cost 01 · Import VAT20%: the minimum a UK buyer adds at the door
Above £135, HMRC charges import VAT at 20% on the goods plus the shipping plus any customs duty, and the courier collects it before delivery. Clean Origin’s shipping page confirms the buyer pays it. On a $2,000 ring, that is at least $400 in VAT before shipping or duty is counted, which is Shoptera’s arithmetic on the 20% rate.
FedEx converts the total into pounds for its bill, so the pound figure depends on the exchange rate on the day. Your card may also charge a foreign-currency fee on the dollar payment to Clean Origin.
The shipping page banner says “Free Shipping Both Ways”. The paragraph under it says free FedEx shipping is on “every domestic order”. This Clean Origin review treats free shipping as US-only, because the page never extends it to international orders.
One commodity code: the part of the bill no one prints
Customs duty applies on top of VAT for UK consumers when the goods are worth more than £135. The rate depends on the item’s commodity code in the UK Global Tariff; rings of precious metal fall under heading 7113. Shoptera could not retrieve the rate from the Trade Tariff service, which blocks automated access, so this review does not give one.
Check the rate yourself on the UK Trade Tariff before you order, using the metal your ring is made from. VAT is then charged on the duty as well as on the ring, so duty raises the VAT bill too.
Rule 01 · Returns60 days: the window, and where the ring must be by then
Clean Origin’s return policy gives 60 days and says the return “must reach the office by the 60th day”. You need a return authorisation first, and you have 14 days from getting it to ship. From the UK, transit to the US eats into those 60 days.
Return shipping is where Clean Origin’s own pages part company. The return policy says it covers return shipping for all product returns. The shipping policy limits free returns to ring orders and loose lab-grown diamonds. Neither page mentions international returns, so ask Clean Origin in writing before you buy whether it will send a prepaid label to the UK.
The catch in the terms
A refund from Clean Origin does not refund the UK import VAT and duty. Those went to HMRC through FedEx, and you claim them back separately. Which? explains that the forms depend on which courier delivered the parcel. Keep the FedEx customs invoice.
Rule 02 · Certification2 labs: IGI and GCAL
Clean Origin’s FAQ names IGI, the International Gemological Institute, and GCAL as the two labs that grade most of its diamonds. A grading report sets out the diamond’s carat weight, colour, clarity and cut.
If the diamond you pick sells before your order is made, Clean Origin says it replaces it with one of equal or higher quality. A September 2026 Trustpilot exchange shows how that can go: the buyer objected to the replacement’s proportions, and Clean Origin replied that it matched the order on the four grading points and carried an IGI Ideal Cut grade.
1-888: a US support line for a UK order
Clean Origin’s support runs on a US toll-free number, 1-888-487-2145, and email. Free resizing appears in the site’s service list, but for a UK buyer it means sending the ring back to the US, which is another international shipment with its own customs paperwork.
77 Diamonds, by contrast, offers free resizing within 60 days and charges £100 after that, from a UK base. For most UK buyers, aftercare is where buying abroad costs the most time.
What the competition does better
77 Diamonds states that UK buyers pay no import duties and that prices include VAT at checkout, with no hidden postage charges. The price you pay is the price. Clean Origin’s price is the price before the door.
Clean Origin answers with a longer return window, 60 days against 77 Diamonds’ 30, and a refund to your original payment on standard pieces. 77 Diamonds cuts its window to 14 days on orders over £15,000.
Public review data
Clean Origin’s Trustpilot profile shows 4.2 out of 5 from 312 reviews, with 83% at five stars and 11% at one star, checked 29 September 2026. Recent reviews on the first page are from US buyers. That is public data, quoted as found, and it says nothing about UK deliveries.
The Clean Origin brand page collects every Shoptera article on the company, and Clean Origin vs 77 Diamonds works through the UK buyer’s choice.
